Skyrunning was founded in 1992 by Italian Marino Giacometti, President of the International Skyrunning Federation (ISF) which sanctions the discipline worldwide and sports the tagline: “Less cloud. More Sky.”
The ISF definition of skyrunning is: “Running in the mountains above 2,000m altitude where the climbing difficulty does not exceed II° grade and the incline is over 30%”.
The three main disciplines for Skyrunning are : Sky, SkyUltra and Vertical
Sky: 20-49km, min 1300 m of vertical climb
SkyUltra: 50-99 km, min 3200 m vertical climb (max 16 hours)
Vertical: 5km max, min 1000m vertical climb
While skyrunning is very popular in Europe, it is still a growing sport in Canada and we look forward to promoting it and showcasing the technical and stunning terrain that Canada has to offer.
